Alaska skiing

From mid April till early May Urban and me took a trip to Alaska. With a simple plan – to ski our brains out. Mission accomplished! We certainly weren’t expecting SO much skiable terrain.

In Anchorage we rented an RV, which turned out to be a great idea. The plan was to ski mostly in the Chugach area. Skiing there is simply unbelievable. So much mountains that you could ski there your whole life. Steep walls with powder on them- every skier’s dream! If you are a ski tourer, you can just make a base camp on the Thompson pass, where you will find so much amazing skiable terrain, that you won’t want to move anywhere else.

…That is if the weather is good. Nobody tells you that skiing Chugach mountains is mostly  about patience and waiting for the weather window. And the forecasts- sadly not really reliable. When skiing above Valdez, you have to follow one rule- Never worry about tomorrow’s weather untill you wake up in the morning and see what the deal is. But when the window came…I can only say it was the best skiing I have ever experienced. 🙂

So when the weather forecast was bad in Chugach, we moved to other mountain passes. This is certainly an advantage of doing a road-skiing-trip. We spent a lot of time on the road, just enjoying the beautiful nature scenery and amazing alaskan wildlife. On the way back we found great spring skiing conditions in the Talkeetna mountains above Hatcher pass.

All in all- Alaskan skiing was amazing and RV life super fun! I wouldn’t do it any other way. 🙂
